The Kleins had raised two sons in their modest Melrose Spanish Revival when they decided to update the entire house. At the same time, they wanted to honor the period details, such as handworked plaster moldings and wrought-iron fixtures. A master suite and bath were added at the rear, the existing kitchen and bath were completely redone, all mechanical systems were upgraded, and a two-story studio/loft with a downstairs guest room was added to the existing detached garage at the rear of the extra-deep lot. Cabinet details in the kitchen were consistent with the detailing of the existing cabinets from the time the house was built in the 1930s.
